I'm told that a respected scientist once said, "If you think you understand quantum theory, THEN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND QUANTUM THEORY."

Can anyone give this quote any provenance?

  1. Oh most definitely true. Start reading a bit on quantum, the more you read on it, the weirder it seems to get. There are some cool videos on youtube that will give you a taste of how weird it gets. Check the dr Quantam videos, here is one that is pretty interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfPeprQ7o...

  2. It was Richard Feynman who said it. It may have been a bit of typical self-deprecating humour, as Feynman probably understood quantum theory better than anyone else.

  3. the closest quote is

"If quantum mechanics hasn't profoundly shocked you, you haven't understood it yet."

    Niels Bohr

  4. Quantum is a mathematical tool that cannot really be understood because it goes against our intuitions.

If you think you understand it, you don't really know what quantum theory is

  5. How about 'If you are not completely confused by quantum mechanics, you do not understand it.' John Wheeler. I think Richard Dawkins said "If you think you understand Quantum theory, then you don't understand Quantum theory". I see some sources say it was Richard Feynman. However I have Richard Feynman as saying 'It is safe to say that nobody understands quantum mechanics.'
