Question:

Quarantine when traveling with a dog to Peru?

Hi, I am traveling to Peru in May and I am thinking of bringing my 8 month old puppy with me, he is a daschund and weights around 12 punds.

I will be traveling with American Airlines and I just found out that I will not be allowed to bring him in the cabin, but that he will have to go in the cargo hold.

My question is if anyone of you know if there is any regulations regarding quarantine when the dog enters Peru, I would prefer to leave him with PetsMart than putting him through a month or more of quarantine in Peru.

Thanks!

  1. I know for a fact that you need to leave your dog for at least 15 days in the ministry's of health office (pet section) and do A LOT of paperwork (burocracy runs high in Peru) so I would recommend you leave your dog in the States. As soon as you arrive, there is a place in customs where you will spend like hours filling the paperwork and then leaving your dog there. The most annoying thing is that you dont know what they will feed your dog, how it will be treated, etc. Better safe than sorry and if you don't plan to move permanently to Peru, just leave your dog at PetsMart or a vet, etc.
