Quarter-Final Round Up of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012 – Tennis News
Nadia Petrova upsets Sara Errani
World number seven, Sara Errani, was handed the biggest surprise of the tour by the 18th ranked Russian star, Nadia Petrova, who bounced back a set down to register the scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. An epic battle of two
hours and 36 minutes witnessed a swirl of momentum from one player to another throughout. In the end, it was the 30-year-old Russian who grabbed the win by winning 101 points in total. Errani clubbed more points than her rival (102) but couldn’t sneak those
important breakpoints in her favour that could have turned the things around for her.
Samantha Stosur stuns Maria Sharapova
Former US Open Champion, Samantha Stosur, sent packing the second seed Russian star, Maria Sharapova, in the quarter-final clash on Thursday. She registered straight sets score line of 6-4, 7-6(10); winning the encounter in just
seven minutes under a couple of hours. It was a terrific result for the 28-year-old Aussie but left the fans dejected who wanted to witness the Russian heartthrob moving on into the semi-finals of the tournament.
Stosur had just one victory against Sharapova before this encounter but now holds a 2-10 head-to-head score line. Talking to the media representative at the court, Stosur said, “I lost nine points in a row from 5-3 up in the second
set, but I knew I had to turn it around and not let that continue. I had a good start in the tie-break and it really helped me forget about all of that. It was a close tie-break. I had some match points - if you miss a few in a row you think about it, but
I stayed positive and kept going for it, and it paid off."
Agnieszka Radwanska topples Caroline Wozniacki
World number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, hammered away the 11th ranked Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to book a spot in the last four. She rounded off the encounter in just an hour and 37 minutes.
It clearly shows her willpower to defend the title at Tokyo.
Victoria Azarenka withdraws
The top seed, Victoria Azarenka, withdrew from the contest due to dizziness leaving the number one German, Angelique Kerber, in the semi-final on Friday. It was an unfortunate event for the spectators who had already seen the back
of their favourite star Sharapova earlier in the day.
Two semi-finals for Friday are:
Nadia Petrova vs. Samantha Stosur
Agnieszka Radwanska vs. Angelique Kerber
