I need information on Quarter Horse racing...I'm writing a paper, and it has to be in by Tuesday! So any help would really be appreciated...because I'm not finding much. So I need some info and history on the sport, and then also a brief overview of the rules. Then also the conformation and physical aspects of the typical racing Quarter horse...thanks!

  1. This will come to late to assist in your paper.  The standard distance for a Quarter Horse to run at optimal speed is , who could have thought:  440 yards, a 1/4 of a mile.  Go on the AQHA official web site will acquaint you with history of the breed that is ironically linked to TB's from the colonies, way pre 1800's.  No AQHA's are not recognized in all  coat colors, all though  more colors now accepted, have been expanded in last decade.  but still must be solid. and must stand at least 14.2 hands  no  limitation on size.  Again , ironically it was the appendix  limited inclusion of the TB's in the mid-1970's that was   the most furious debates in the industry that gave AQHA's increased size and hence allowed racing to  proceed at 660 and 880 without looking like a bunch of Arabians going a mile and a half.  Incidentally the King Ranch was adamantly opposed at first, as were most old school owners/breeders.  now we have a viable, more versatile animal that still retains the original breed standards, albeit, bigger and dare I say better.

  2. Where to start,Quarter Horses are often raced 660 yards but some races can go as far as 900 yards, the breed is actually very old some evidence exists that Quarter Horses were being breed as early as the 1800s but they may have been around much earlier than that, most believe that the American Quarter horse is the result of breeding an English Thoroughbred and crossing it with an Arabian or Spanish breed or horse,The American Quarter Horse Association was formed by several of the biggest ranches in the mid and south west some of these were the four 6s and the King ranch it was closed to smaller ranches so that the AQHA could set there own standard of what the American Quarter horse would be, these horses stand between 14.2 hands and 16 hands but some are taller but they are not the average, these horses can reach full speed in 2 to 3 strides making them very quick from a stand still ,but they peak in speed very quickly, the Thoroughbred in them gives them their stamina, they can be any color. Hope it helps.
