Quarter-final round previews – Qatar Total Open 2013
Stage is all set for the top women players at the hard courts of Doha, as the quarter-final round begins on Friday. It is very interesting to see that all the eight quarter-finalists are Top-10 players on the WTA Tour. How exciting
it will be to see all the top class contenders battling it out for glory at the Qatar Total Open 2013 this weekend.
The first quarter-final battle will be contested between the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, and the Italian tennis sensation, Sara Errani, on Friday’s eve. Azarenka is the defending champion in Doha and is under
pressure to save her ranking points by lifting the trophy once again. However, she has been ballistic in the initial rounds of the tournament so far. She registered a devastating 6-0, 6-0, victory against Christina McHale in the pre-quarter-final round.
On the other hand, Errani hunted down likes of former world number five, Daniela Hantuchova, in three gruelling sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, to book a date with Azarenka. With a Grand Slam title on her back and a flawless record against
Errani, Azarenka will be the hot favourite to win the battle.
Number four seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, will take on the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the other quarter-final match. Radwanska ousted the other former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, 6-1, 7-6(6), in the third
round brawl, whilst Wozniacki was successful against the unseeded German, Mona Barthel. A tough contest is anticipated between these two quarter-finalists but Wozniacki’s poor form in the recent past has made Radwanska the hot favourite for winning.
Russian diva, Maria Sharapova, also made it to the round of eight when she outplayed the Czech professional, Klara Zakopalova, 6-3, 6-3, in the third round. She will take on the Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur, who got the better
of the unseeded Russian, Svetlana Keznetsova, 6-4, 7-5. The world number three, Sharapova, is expected to win the match against eighth seed Stosur.
Last but the most important quarter-final of the tournament will be played between the Czech number one, Petra Kvitova, and the American powerhouse, Serena Williams. If Williams wins the upcoming match against Kvitova, she will
be crowned the new world number one player next week. She is currently holding the number two spot in the WTA Premier Rankings and is merely one victory away to reclaim her throne from Azarenka. Williams already leads 3-0 against Kvitova and it is highly expected
that she will become the number one player in the world on coming Monday.
