Quarter-finalists decided at Breaka Burleigh Surf Pro
The latest day of Breaka Burleigh Surf Pro delivered yet another heavy dose of mesmerising performances and adrenaline-pumping action at Burleigh Heads in Australia on Saturday, February 9, 2013.
The proceedings on the latest day of the competition saw the completion of Round 6 (Round of 16), thus revealing the eight quarter-finalists.
The first heat of Round 6 saw New Zealand’s Ricardo Christie put on an impressing performance to get the better of Australia’s Adam Melling, Bede Durbidge and Ryan Callinan, courtesy of a 7.83 and 6.50 off his best-two waves for a winning heat-total of 14.33
points.
Melling made it through into the quarter-finals as well after finishing in second place with a heat-total of 14.13 points, while both Durbidge and Callinan were eliminated after finishing with a two-wave total of 12.54 and 11.90 points.
The second heat featured the biggest upset of the day, as Australia’s Mick Fanning got eliminated from the competition, courtesy of a solid performance by Brazil’s Marco Fernandez.
The Brazilian surfer collected a 5.83 and an excellent 9.77 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 15.60 points to claim the win, thus advancing to the quarter-finals.
Australia’s Mitch Crews pushed Fanning to third place with a heat-total of 14.70 points, just 0.04 more points than the two-time Association of Surfing Professional (ASP) World Champion.
Australia’s Jack Duggan joined Fanning on the elimination list after finishing in fourth place with a heat-total of 7.83 points.
The third heat saw Australia’s Owen Wright comfortably make his way through into the quarter-finals after clinching victory with a heat-total of 15.50 points, which comprised of a 7.00 and an 8.50-point ride.
His fellow countryperson Brent Dorrington accompanied him into the next stage of the competition after finishing second with a heat-total of 12.33 points.
Australia’s Dion Atkinson and Cooper Chapman rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 10.03 and 8.53 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Brazil’s Alejo Muniz and Australia’s Thomas Woods make their way through into the quarter-finals after finishing with a heat-total of 14.80 and 14.13 points respectively.
Portugal’s Frederico Morais finished third with a heat-total of 13.97 points, while Australia’s Davey Cathels finished last after registering a heat-total of 11.96 points. Both the surfers got ejected from the contention for the event title as a result.
