Quarterback Cam Newton to attend Carolina Panthers rookie camp – NFL News
As Carolina Panthers three-day rookie camp starts on Monday, July 23, 2012, there are many players apart from rookies that are scheduled to attend it. Quarterback Cam Newton will be one of them as he missed the last season’s rookie camp
because of the lockout.
The players who will participate in the rookie camp include those who have missed this seasons Organised Team Activities (OTA’s) and minicamp due to injury.
Head Coach Ron Rivera thinks that it will help players gel into the format Panthers play in. Talking to Charlotte Observer, Rivera said:
"That’ll give us a chance to get those guys a little more acclimated because they really didn’t get a chance to participate in minicamp, It’ll give us a chance to see where they all are. Hopefully, they’re all 100 percent.”
During the camp, Newton and other quarterbacks will have a chance to get themselves comfortable with new wide receivers.
The players who missed the minicamp due to injuries include Charles Johnson, Thomas Davis, Jeff Otah, Ron Edwards and Terrell McClain. It is unknown who among them will attend the rookie camp.
Panthers have drafted wide receiver Joe Adams in the fourth round of this year’s draft. They have also added a bunch of undrafted players.
Although Newton had a gem of a rookie season only few players are able to have, many said that missing the offseason training greatly affected his output.
Newton was drafted by Panthers as the first overall pick in the 2011 draft. He signed a four-year, $22 million contract with Panthers.
He was given the starting quarterback spot in the team and in his first game he covered more than 422 yards, beating the record set by Peyton Manning.
Newton broke the record of most yards covered, most passes completed, best completion percentage and most passing touchdowns for any rookie quarterback.
He also got a quarterback rating of 84.5, highest ever for a rookie. He covered a total of 4,051 rushing yards.
He was given the Pro Bowl spot for his outstanding performance throughout the season.
With Newton getting more time to train with his fellow teammates, he seems to be heading to another record-breaking season.
