Quarterback Jay Cutler to undergo surgery on thumb today – NFL News
Chicago Bears primary quarterback Jay Cutler will undergo surgery on his thumb today revealed Bears general manager Jerry Angelo.
"We're anticipating a good result, but we'll know more hopefully in the next 48 hours," Angelo said. "It's a shame because he was really coming into his own. He was really understanding the protections, keeping his eye level down
the field. The things he was doing were pretty special."
Chicago Bears are anticipating a return for Cutler during the Playoffs however no confirmed timeline could be given until after the surgery takes place and consultation with medical staff.
The injury to Cutler is a big blow to Bears playoff hopes as the quarterback was the offensive fulcrum for his team and the pressure is on backup quarterback Caleb Hanie to perform against Oakland Raiders and continue his teams
five game winning streak.
Cutler got the injury during Bears 31-20 victory over San Diego Chargers in game week 11 of the National Football League. Cutler attempted a tackle on Chargers cornerback Antoine Cason resulting in the injury however he completed
the game and did not talk about any injuries during his post game chat with reporters.
Later Chicago Tribune contributor Vaughn McClure broke the devastating news for Bears fans on his twitter feed.
The 28 year old has been in fine form this season helping Bears recover from a poor start to the season to start a five game winning streak and lead Bears to second in the National Football Conference North Division. Cutler has
completed 182 passes from 314 attempts with a 58% completion rate covering 2,319 yards during the current season. The quarterback has made 13 passing touchdowns and has been intercepted just seven times this season.
With Cutler sidelined Bears players have put their faith into backup quarterback Caleb Hanie with linebacker Brian Urlacher saying
"We can live with Caleb Hanie. Even [third-stringer Nathan Enderle]. With the way we play defense and special teams and the way we run the football, we can win with those guys at quarterback.
Bears are also looking to sign a stop gap quarterback with vetrans Josh McCown and T.J. O'Sullivan also on their radar while the news that former Bears quarterback Kyle Orton has been waived by Denver Broncos will also incur interest
from Coach Lovie Smith.
