Quarterback Tim Tebow will not play in New York Jets’ final preseason game – NFL News
As usually is the case with New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, he will not play his starters in the preseason finale that will be played against Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
Ever since taking the head coaching job, Ryan has never put his starting team on the field in the final preseason game, but the interesting thing is that this year one of the Jets’ backup players will also sit out.
That player is Tim Tebow. He has been more than just a backup for Jets ever since he has joined them.
Jets will play their season opener on Sunday, September 09. It seems sensible for Jets to rest their starters as they will have only a few days to practise for the start of the regular season.
Tebow will play his part in the game against Carolina Panthers this Sunday, August 26. He will play in the fourth quarter as quarterback Mark Sanchez will start the game and play the first three quarters.
So far, Tebow has given mixed performances. He has been able to complete only nine out of 22 passes while covering 96 yards. Tebow did manage to rush six times and covered 39 yards, but he was also sacked on four occasions.
Tebow himself is not hesitant to play a smaller role in the team. He said:
"No, it's not difficult. You just know your role and you try to do it the best you can. When you get opportunities, you make the most of them."
Jets have plans to play Tebow as a wild-cat package, but Coach Rex Ryan will not put this practice to test during the preseason games in order to keep the scheme a surprise for opponents.
Tebow thinks he will be able to perform well without practicing the package. He said:
"For most of this training camp, OTA's, minicamp, I've been just a regular quarterback. I've been training as a quarterback ... There will be chances of running, chances (for) options, reads and things like that, but you're still a quarterback. You still
have to read the defense, make reads and make checks.”
