Quarterback decision is a tough pill to swallow for San Francisco 49ers’ Alex Smith – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers’ decision to start with quarterback Colin Kaepernick instead of Alex Smith in Week 13 game against St. Louis Rams has frustrated the latter, who has said that it is a tough pill to swallow.
After recovering from concussion, Smith expected to get the starting role back, but the team chose to continue starting with Colin, who had served the team pretty well on the starting line while Smith was recovering.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Smith said:
“This is such a great team, such a great group of guys in this locker room. There’s something special going on. It’s a tough pill to swallow, for sure.”
The player has also spoken his heart out in this matter and while expressing his displeasure over the decision the quarterback said, via ESPN:
“I feel like the only thing I did to lose my job was get a concussion."
Smith added:
"It's tough. It stings the most just because I really felt there was something special going on here and you sacrifice and invest so much time. I felt like I was playing good football. I have no idea what's going to happen from here. All I can do now is just prepare and get ready."
Colin has started two games this season, securing victories in both, and the management apparently decided to give Colin his third straight start so he could carry the winning momentum forward.
A day earlier when the decision was announced, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh appreciated both players and said that he did not have any doubts on talent of both quarterbacks.
The decision, Harbaugh maintained, was taken keeping in view the team’s interest. Although Smith did not start his career on an outstanding note, his recent performance, especially after arrival of Harbaugh in San Francisco, has been exceptional. He led the team to playoffs last year, ending a long drought, and took the team to a decent record before getting a concussion a few weeks ago.
This has further irked Smith, who will be present on the field against the Rams to back up Colin. On the other hand, some experts have backed 49ers’ decision, saying that starting with Colin is a good choice.
