Queen's 'Third World First' Christmas broadcast details - did it harm the monarchy?

It was early 80s. The Queen's Christmas broadcast showed her having tea with Indira Gandhi and discussing Third World problems. I thought at the time that it was off-target as a Christmas message. Enoch Powell said the Queen should pay more attention to her own people. The Sun ran a poll on this and the results showed overwhelming support for him. I myself met people who said they would never watch her Christmas message again - and they never have.

My point is, that I think commentators and journalists have missed this as an important factor causing decline in respect for the monarchy at that time. Journalists aren't interested in such things, but I think this broadcast damaged the monarchy among their natural supporters. What do you think?

  1. The Queen is also Queen of India , Canada  Australia

    She was discussing "her" problems

    Some journalists have "major 'Problems

  2. Err no, Jesayre, India has been a republic since 1950 - she has never been queen of it.

  3. Difficult one, as the most vehement supporters of the monarchy tend to be ill-educated rednecks - ie, like the vast majority of Sun readers - and the majority of such people are dimwitted racists.

We should therefore conclude that this broadcast probably raised the esteem of the monarchy among its natural detractors (people like me) but lowered it in that of its grunting, Sun-reading, Powell-supporting enthusiasts.

    Win some, lose some?
