It is roumoured that British Queen Consorts have written popular songs of their day. Queen Alexandra, consort to King Edward vii, is said to have penned a few songs for the famous music hall singer Marie Lloyd. Though she spoke with her native Danish accent all her life her english was excellent and she was literally the Queen of the double entendre.Three of Marie Lloyds' most famous songs: " A Little Bit Of What You Fancy Does You Good", "When I Take My Morning Promenade" and "Lady Barbara's Predicament", were all roumoured to have come from her sherry fuelled imagination when left alone for the evening while The King galivanted.

It appears that she took her much beloved daghter-in-law, Princess May into her confidence and she later took up the pastime when she became Queen Mary in 1910.How amazing it is to think that this most formidable of characters is mentioned in a diary of her chamber maid as writing the lyrics to George Formby's "Oh Mr Woo".

Will Camilla do the same?

  1. My grandfather was a butler there and whenever he asked her for a double entendre, Queen Alexandra would give him one.

  2. Camilla's interest is horses,so I doubt it.

Queen Alexandra was always interested in music, even after she suffered great hearing loss, after suffering a bout of rheumatic fever. She had the hereditary form of deafness known as otosclerosis, and the rheumatic fever noticeably worsened her hearing.

Alexandra loved the High Mass because of the music;she could hear the music. She also played piano, never letting her deafness interfer with her musical interests. Many a guest who could play was often asked to accompany Alexandra in duets!

  3. When George Formby was presented at Windsor Castle to give a private performance, his wife later remarked to the King that the princesses  Elizabeth and Margaret, knew all the words to his songs.  The King replied, " well that's no wonder, they play his records all day long!"  Obviously, they must have inherited Queen Mary's admiration for the Lancashire Saucy Performer! Queen Alexandra was also a dedicated photographer and lover of the arts, so I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if She penned a few ditties.  I am not familiar with Lady Barbara's Predicament, however, perhaps others will know the lines.
