  1. She would have needed French to speak with the continental courts.  She would have needed Latin for the Languages of the Law and Religion.  She would have needed English the language of her people.  The other three languages would have been to prove that she was a well educated lady.  Possibly Spanish, German and Greek.

  2. Well, Charles V spoke four languages regularly: Spanish to God, Italian to ladies, French to men, and German to his horse. He did not speak English because drunken tourists had not yet arrived in Andalucia.

  3. You tell me and i'll give you 10 points.

  4. To communicate with all of her suitors. She had many suitors, domestic and foreign. She was able to use her unmarried state to her advantage, for Spain could not make war on England in France was courting Elizabeth (and visa versa as well). She entertained many proposals. If Elizabeth married a foreigner, she would have to choose which country to marry and she would hand England’s rule over to that country as well. If she married domestically, she again would be forced to choose, for she could not appease everyone. Queen Elizabeth was also politically clever. She was always able to use marriage as an advantage, even when she was older. She worked hard on political affairs, often staying up late at night writing letters and state papers. She tried to keep England out of war for most of her rule, for she saw how war could damage England and its finances from her father’s overindulgence in war.

  5. It was only nobility that got taught then.It would be imperative for her to speak these languages not only so she could receive at court but also as security i.e. She could speak are right letters in a language this would be to secretive.

  6. She was admired for her power, and fluently speaking and writing six different languages meant she was well educated and well informed. Rather than using an interpreter, Elizabeth could simply entertain her foreign ambassadors completely by herself, and she had the capability to build a very close relationship on a personal level with her "foreign acquaintance”.

Since England at the time was a weak nation compared to France and Spain (two most powerful nations during the Middle Ages), she needed to be able to negotiate and design foreign policies that best suited her nation’s interest. Being able to speak foreign languages could work to her benefits and advantages.

Elizabeth was a very cautious person and she did not trust many people at her court since there were numerous spies from every corner. Knowing all these foreign languages meant that she did not have to worry about any "mistranslations" or "misinterpretations".

  7. Because at that time, not everyone spoke English, and the Queen would have had to communicate with people from lots of different countries.

  8. The more languages one speaks, the more people they can speak with. It would make for better understanding between nations and cultures.

  9. To show that she was educated and thus superior. Alot of foreigners didn't actually speak English so on a pratical level she could negoiate. Perhaps all monachs were educated in this manner, even her father Henry VIII. On a religous level, the bible was written in greek and latin, being on of the most biggest figureheads to change the English Church she would need to understand the scared texts.

Maybe she just like to show off :)

  10. So she could order take-out food  from all the different food joints.

  11. 'Cos she liked to play kinky s*x games and part of that was speaking in a different accent or language
