I'm doing some research, and I found that HM Queen Elizabeth is a descendant of Bess of Hardwick. I'm a bit confused as to how. Can anyone tell me?

  1. 10-greats granddaughter once and 11-greats-granddaughter three times. The closest descent (the first one I gave) is as follows:

    Bess of Hardwick →

    (Sir?) Charles Cavendish →

    William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne →

    Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne →

    Lady Margaret Cavendish →

    Lady Henrietta Cavendish Holles →

    Lardy Margaret Harley →

    William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland →

    Lord Charles Cavendish-Bentinck →

    Rev. Charles Cavendish-Bentinck →

    Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck →

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (the Queen Mother) →

    Elizabeth II

The three slightly more distant descents (which are equal in degree), converge at Lord Charles Cavendish-Bentinck after which the descent is the same as above.

  2. Queen Elizabeth II is related to Bess of Hardwick through her mother, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. The Queen's material grandmother was Nina Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck, the Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Nina was the eldest daughter of Rev. Charles Cavendish-Bentinck (grandson of British Prime Minister William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland)

The 3rd to 9th Dukes of Portland were descended from the Cavendish family in the female line and took the surname Cavendish-Bentinck or a variant thereof. Bess of Hardwick married Sir William Cavendish and together they had eight children. Some of William and Bess's descendants became the Dukes of Devonshire, and others became Dukes of Newcastle.

William Henry Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland married Lady Dorothy Cavendish, who was the daughter of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, who in turn was the great-great-great grandson of Bess of Hardwick.
