  1. Queen Isabella of Spain appeared on a US postage stamp in 1893 and was not only the first Queen to do so, but the first woman! Her patronage of Christopher Columbus made his discovery of the 'New World' possible.

There are also many pictures of her on wikipedia:

    Hope this helps!

  2. I'm assuming you are referring to the First Queen Isabel of Spain...there were two Reigning monarchs named Isabel, and here is one interesting fact:  her name was ÍSABEL, NOT Isabella, which would be Italian.  She was Spanish, NOT Italian, and though she married a man who owned property in Italy, that does NOT make her Italian.  (ok, that's my pet peeve rant...)

How about this...she eloped to marry Fernando, because her family wanted her to marry José of Portugal, who was something like 40 years older than she...she wasn't into the arrangement.  They were, like 14 and 15 at the time.

She was the first Reigning Queen of Spain.

She might have been illegitimate...there was a huge war over whether she or Juana la Beltraneja would be queen.  Neither was truly descended from the previous king, who was supposed to have been sterile.

  3. Queen Isabel the Catholic changed the face of the world.  She was instrumental in the defence of Christianity in Europe; she sponsored the discovery of America; began the largest evangelisation campaign since the Apostles; won the longest war in history; promoted women and prohibited slavery; was a devoted wife and mother of five; and she codified universal human rights.

The Castilian version of her name was Ysabel (Isabel in modern spelling), which traces etymologically to Hebrew Elisth or Elizabeth. In Germanic countries she is usually known by the Latin form of her name, Isabella.

Isabella found the time for education, which was very important to her. She learned Latin at age thirty five. Also, she wanted scholars to set up palace schools at her court. She also educated her sons and daughters. Isabella lived a life as a mother, wife, Catholic and queen. Her dream was for continued rule for her family, which was successful, and greatness for her country.
