In 1895, Liliuokalani was arrested and forced to reside in Iolani Palace after a cache of weapons was found in the gardens of her home in Washington Place. She denied knowing of the existence of this cache and was reportedly unaware of others' efforts to restore the royalty

She probably had them for self-defence. She had already been deposed at an earlier stage in her life and there were probably those who would have loved to see her dead. The absence of her powerbase would have probably made it needful for her to have a weapons cahce. When she was placed under house arrest that need would have ceased because the americans would have had guards on her home.
