Queen Mary Sailing Club’s Jerry Wales claims RS700 National Championship title at Weymouth & Portland
A consistent sail from Queen Mary Sailing Club’s Jerry Wales brought him on top of the standings to claim the title of RS700 National Championships held at Weymouth and Portland National
Sailing Academy. Wales gained the overall lead early in the championship and continued his dominance until the final day of the event to claim the title with 29 points after 13 races and three discards.
The weather conditions on the final day at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy were ideal to have a brilliant sail on Weymouth waters. Alex Newton-Southon grabbed a quick lead
in the first race and pushed other sailors behind by gaining a clear advantage. The title contender, Stephen Powell followed him at second place ahead of Jon Heissig.
The winds became less strong in the second race but that didn't have a great effect on the outcome of the race. Newton-Southon took the lead again ahead of Ian Nolan at a short length
towards the windward mark. Mike Dencher, who couldn’t continue his sail in the first race and had to pull out, chased both of them at third place. However, Newton-Southon dropped down during the race and Nolan won the second race by getting past him.
On the other hand, Wales took a fifth and a third place in both races of the day and finished the championship on top of the standings followed by Stephen Powell and Mike Dencher on second
and third place respectively.
The overall standings at the end of RS700 National Championships are given below:
