Queen’ Plate 2011 - Inglorious wins 5 at Woodbine Oaks – First Filly to win in 10 years
Woodbine Oaks is a happy hunting ground for the three-year old filly, Inglorious, who swept the $1 million Queen’s Plate, and, became the first filly to do that since 2001.
Twenty odd days back, Inglorious landed the most important race in Canada the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks on 5 June.
Sent off at odds of 9-to-2, Hennessy’s daughter made history and became the 34th filly to win the first jewel in Canada’s Triple Crown of racing.
Trainer, Josie Carroll, enjoyed her second win in the Queen’s Plate. Before Inglorious, Endenwold was her lucky horse that brought her success in the 1 ¼ mile classic. Owners, Dona and, Vern, received their first Queen’s Plate, so did jockey, L Contreras,
who was making his debut in the race.
Inglorious was the only filly among 17 three-year old colts and geldings. She outran them all to secure a win at the Woodbine racecourse by half a length and score five consecutive victories at Woodbine’s poly-track surface.
Post race favourite, Check Your Soul at 9 to 5 was considered the one to beat as she came off a massive victory in the Plate Trial Stakes by 3 ¼ length on 5 June, 2011. Check Your Soul previously had two starts at the Woodbine and won both of them quite
comfortably but fell way short at the Queen’s Plate, to finish seventh, 6 ¼ length behind Inglorious.
Three year old bay filly Inglorious made a surging run and left her male counterparts to follow her tracks. On 26 June, Inglorious was at another level altogether and didn’t let any colt, or, gelding faze her.
Luis Contreras was impressive as he guided the filly past five opponents in the first mile including, Spooky Kitten, the pace maker and also the runner up. Inglorious ruled the poly-track surface and bagged four wins out of six starts.
On the outside, Luis Contreras kept Inglorious relaxed as the pair ran just behind the favourite Check Your Soul. The pace was quick and on the second turn, Patrick Husbands decided to take on Check Your Soul and zipped past everyone from seventh to second.
That was the cue for Inglorious as Luis Contreras sensed the urgency within the lot and proactively notched up the pace and strides became longer and faster.
Approaching Check Your Soul, Inglorious was always going to be a favourite because she sure could pack a final punch at the end and all eyes were on jockey, Luis Contreras, waiting for that final potent surge to ultimate glory.
As the race entered the final quarter mile, Inglorious went to the outside again, and, seized command of the race, winning by a comfortable margin of 2 ½ lengths, covering the 10 furlong distance in 2 minutes and 2.63 seconds.
