  1. His role is not to support the people but support the Queen

  2. His primary role is to support The Queen. This he has done and done better than other men would have. It's not easy living in your wife's/spouse's shadow. It says a lot about his character that he did.

But prior to his marriage, he was a naval officer and served in WWII. Don't forget, in spite of noble birth and privilege he did put his life on the line.

  3. The Duke is a supporter and sponsor of many organisations. He established The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in 1956 to give young people "a sense of responsibility to themselves and their communities". The scheme now operates in 100 countries around the world. He has also been President of the World Wide Fund for Nature.

  4. Given the queen his utmost support must count for something.

  5. give us one h**l of a chuckle

  6. Had Dodi and Diana bumped off

  7. said some good things fought in ww2

  8. He's been a good consort for over 50 years, he also set up the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme which ahs been so succesful it been copied or set up in another 80 countries.

  9. Elizabeth II overshadowed him

  10. none of them has done anything for Britain or its people

  11. Prince Albert did not do a thing for the British in fact he introduced us to more Germanic culture as he was a German, than introducing British way to the Europeans. Also by that time the British had a huge empire which was created by industrialists & great engineers & exploriers who was doing for the name of Queen & Country + and a knighthood or 2!

At lest with Prince Philip, we can have a laugh at his actions & he these days laughs with us!

  12. Philip served his adopted country during World War II;he was a naval lieutenant seing active combat duty. He makes many goodwill tours all over the Commonwealth and world to represent the UK.

He still keeps active with the military: from http://www.royal.gov/uk

"Although Prince Philip gave up his active naval career in July 1951, he remains to this day closely connected to every branch of Service life, visiting troops in their units and overseas on duty.

In October 2006, for example, he travelled to Basra, Iraq, to meet British troops serving in the region...He is also Captain-General of the Royal Marines and Colonel-in-Chief, or Colonel, of a number of British and overseas regiments."

He also has charitible pursuits to look after.

"Since The Queen's accession, The Duke of Edinburgh has played a prominent part in many aspects of national life.

The Duke of Edinburgh accompanies The Queen on all her Commonwealth tours and State visits overseas, as well as on tours and visits to all parts of the United Kingdom. He has also travelled abroad a great deal on his own account.

In 2005 he undertook around 406 engagements with The Queen and on his own in the UK and abroad.

He is patron or president of some 800 organisations, with special interests in scientific and technological research and development, the encouragement of sport, the welfare of young people, and conservation and the environment.

Industry is a particular interest, and there is hardly an aspect of the UK's industrial life with which Prince Philip is not familiar.

He has visited research stations and laboratories, coalmines and factories, engineering works and industrial plants - all with the aim of understanding, and contributing to the improvement of, British industrial life.

As Patron of The Work Foundation, he has sponsored six conferences on the human problems of industrial communities within the Commonwealth.

The environment is another key interest. Since visiting Antarctica and the South Atlantic in 1956-57, Prince Philip has devoted himself to raising public awareness of the relationship of humanity with the environment.

He was the first President of World Wildlife Fund - UK (WWF) from its formation in 1961 to 1982, and International President of WWF (later the World Wide Fund for Nature) from 1981 to 1996. He is now President Emeritus of WWF.

As a keen sportsman, Prince Philip is an enthusiastic promoter of sports. He was President of the International Equestrian Federation from 1964 to 1986.

He is President of Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR), Admiral of the Royal Yacht Squadron, and has twice served as President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (the MCC).

He is also Patron of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators of the British Empire, and has been Master of Trinity House since 1969.

The Duke of Edinburgh has visited 141 countries to date.

In his flying career, he flew nearly 6,000 flying hours as a pilot from 1952 to 1997.

He has made nearly 5,000 speeches and chaired over 1,500 meetings since 1952.

The Duke of Edinburgh has served as Chancellor of the Universities of Cambridge (1976-), Edinburgh (1952-), Salford (1967-91) and Wales (1948-76). He is also a Life Governor of King's College, London and Patron of London Guildhall University."

Unfortunately, the Duke of Edinburgh is cursed with "Foot in Mouth" disease and has made some eyebrow raising comments that have overshadowed his good works. He has said things that even make the Queen roll her eyes! But she knows that her husband is blunt and gruff and she does try to help him think before saying something he may think is "clever" but comes across as insulting.
