Queensland Open is back in Australasia PGA Tour calendar
The Professional Golf Association Tour of Australasia has had a change of heart: The Queensland Open is back on the schedule the next season.
"Throughout the years the sunshine state has produced some of our country's best international golfers, all of whom started out playing in events such as the Queensland Open," said Brian Thorburn.
"The Queensland Open will be the third PGA Tour of Australasia tournament contested in Queensland, and we look forward to working alongside Golf Queensland in the coming months and years," organisers announced yesterday.
Peter Castrisos, the Chairperson of Golf Queensland said that sponsors like Isuzu make events like the Queensland Open possible.
Without strong sponsorship, he said, such events would not hope to possibly be open to professionals or amateurs.
He also stated that the 72-hole greens of the Isuzu Queensland Open will provide the necessary proving grounds amateurs crave for.
The last time the Queensland Open had been held was in 2007. Ryan Haller, a Queenslander himself, won at the event. It had not been held since.
Interestingly enough, Brookwater Golf and Country Club had once been on top in Golf Australia’s list of the best golf clubs in the state. Since as early as 1925, the prestigious Queensland Open had been a favourite of some of the world’s best golfers.
Peter Senior had his two cents too. "The Queensland tournament has a rich history and it is encouraging to see it back on the PGA Tour of Australasia schedule in 2013".
Senior’s words have the weight of an Emirates Australian Open champion, where he made history, being the oldest person to hoist the cup. He was 53.
The current week, he will be in Byron Bay toughing it out against a field of legends that includes Ian Baker-Finch, Terry Price and Peter Fowler.
Isuzu, the motor company, will be sponsoring the event for the next three years. Players playing at the Queensland Open will be earning Official World Golf Ranking points. The winner’s purse is currently at $110,000.
The Queensland Open is set to begin on the 22nd of August and will be ending on the 25th of the same month, 2013.
