Queensland Reds eye their third Super Rugby title - Rugby news
The Queensland Reds have their sights set on their third Super Rugby title as they are only two victories away from the crown.
The Reds, who claimed the title consecutively from 1994 to 1995, are trying their best to repeat the performance after 16 years. They produced an outstanding display of team work and ended up on top of the point’s tables in the ongoing Super Rugby championship.
The Reds did not start the season in a promising fashion as many players fell prey to various injuries, but they are on course to conclude the season in great fashion. Although the squad has not come out of the injury crisis, they still have depth in their
lineup and should be able to cope with the opposition.
Talking to reporters, Reds’ centre Anthony Faingaa, said that his team is motivated to clinch the victory. He added that their present head coach, Ewen McKenzie, has made the side mentally very strong and all the players were aiming for the title. Faingaa
further said that despite large injuries to the Reds, coach McKenzie is not ready to include half fit layers in his side.
He furthered the point by saying, “Ewen is not selecting anyone if they don't train on Monday - he has got tough standards but I think that is the right decision. That's been Ewen from day one and that is why we have gone so well - he has had to make the
hard decisions.”
Faingaa further stated that all the players will be tested before they are included in the play-off matches. However, Faingaa, who is also suffering with hamstrings problems, hoped that he will be able to make his place in the semi-final clash. He said
that, "It is a hamstring so you just don't know. But Link (McKenzie) knows I will do whatever it takes to be at my best next week. I am ready to go but medical staff and Ewen have the last decision - it is a waiting game."
The Reds have a bye this week before their semi-final clash on July 1.
