Queensland Reds sail over Chiefs 19-11 in last Super Rugby round match – Rugby news
The Queensland Reds cashed in another victory in their last round match of the ongoing Super Rugby competition, over the Chiefs, by 19-11 in Waikato Stadium, Hamilton.
The Chiefs had a rough day with their defence as they committed too many fouls in the second-half. Quade Cooper helped his side with 14 points to grab their 13th victory of the championship. The win has also locked in their position on top of
the point’s tables and their place in the play-offs.
The Queensland Reds were clearly the favourites of the contest as they were having wonderful season in the current Super Rugby championship. Meanwhile, the hosts Chiefs, were clearly behind the top ladder Reds from the very start of the game. The Reds took
an early lead over the Chiefs in the sixth minute of the match when Liam Gill scored for his team with a well executed try. Quade Cooper further increased the Reds lead to 7-0 with a follow up conversion kick in the very next minute.
Both the teams were struggling with the ball because of the slippery conditions on the ground. The Waikato stadium in Hamilton was soaked because of the un interrupted down pour over last two days.
The Reds were awarded a penalty kick during the 18th minute of the game as Graham committed an off-side foul and Cooper committed no mistake to make it successful for his team. The Reds were well in front of the Chiefs with a 10-0 lead but the
hosts bounced back in to the game quite nicely and scored six points in the remaining time of the first-half. Clan Donald scored on both penalty kicks for his team in the 31st and 37th minutes of the match.
The Reds were leading the game by 10-6 at the interval and spectators were expecting a good second-half after the break.
The Reds started off the second-half sharply and made some desperate efforts to pass through the defence lines of the Chiefs but they were kept from the scoring for ten minutes. Quade Cooper extended his team's lead to 13-6 with another well directed penalty
kick after the Chiefs infringement at a ruck during the 51st minute.
The Chiefs kept on breaching the ruck and Cooper availed every opportunity as he succeeded two more time to nail three-pointers for the Reds to increase their total to 19. Quade Cooper was brilliant with his splendid kicks and he put his side in a comfortable
position to record another impressive victory in the championship.
