Queensland and Western Australia win Day 5 Games in U-21 National Hockey Championship
The teams of Queensland and Western Australia (WA) won their respective matches against South Australia (SA) and Northern Territory (NT) by 4-2 and 1-0 on Day 5 of the U-21 National Australian Hockey Championship being held at the Perth Hockey Stadium.
In the opening match of the day, Queensland, the undefeated squad of the Championship, took South Australia down by two goals to hold back its winning-streak. South Australia showed impressive performance in most part of the first period and held the ball under their possession. However, it was Queensland which drew the first blood in the 3rd minute of the match, when Daniel Mathiesen scored the goal from the field effort.
However, the South Australian team was also playing a cautious game and tied the knots with Queensland in few minutes. Cameron Joyce converted a short-corner in the 8th minute through an outstanding flick. Joshua Gloedes, the custodian of SA, made plenty of dives to deny the attacks from Queensland and kept his side in the game.
On the other side, the South Australian strikers were also accomplishing to and fro attacks against Queensland. Their struggle served them in the 19th minute when Alistair Oliver chipped in a comfortable shot into the goal and took the results into their favour. In a matter of seconds, the Queensland strikers replied and had it all even by a goal from Dylan Wotherspoon.
Soon after the one minute, Peter Dillon notched another goal for his team and earned a single goal lead, 3-2. Both the teams failed to make an addition until the last minute of the first half when Jacob Webber scored a goal and increased the lead up to two goals, 4-2.
It was the overall scoring in the match and without marking a goal; the South Australian team lost the game at 4-2.
In the other match of the day, Western Australia (WA) edged past Northern Territory (NT) by a single goal. Interestingly, only a single goal was scored in the 70 minutes of play and it belonged to WA.
The match between WA and NT was started at very high intensity, as both squads were looking a go-ahead goal in the very early minutes. However, the two sides failed to score a goal in the early part of the match.
WA and NT though received many short-corners as well as field scoring chances in the match, but the defence from the either side was not ready to do so. In the 29th minute of the match, Steve Durrell received a neat pass from Mat Lim and volleyed it into the NT goal.
It was the only goal from both the sides in the two halves and WA rode away the field by 1-0 triumph.
