Queensland defeat South Australia by 1-0 in U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship
Ashlea Fey notched the solitary goal of the match and had an assist, as Queensland powered a narrow 1-0 win over South Australia in the Day-8 game of the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship that took place at the National Hockey Centre in Lyneham,
Canberra.
It was the first match of the day, where Queensland opened the game in their typical fast and attacking way. It was a chilly weather with clouds and rain. The usual style of Queensland put South Australia under intense pressure. Both the squads made penetrations
against each other in the opening minutes. However, the strikers from Queensland succeeded in their struggle and earned a short-corner in the 12th minute. Ashlea Fey scored off the opportunity through a well-coordinated reverse shot and dominated
the field.
The maiden goal increased the strength of Queensland, but they failed to break the defensive-line of South Australia in the remaining time-period. Karri McMahon and her team-mate, Brooke Appleyard, were brave enough to deny the attacks from Queensland.
The second half of play was filled with lots of action from the two sides, particularly from the Southern players. However, Emily Burrows made vital dives on the occasions to save and clear the ball from the danger-zone. After an end-to-end play, the match
concluded with Queensland coming out victorious at 1-0.
In the later part of the day, the fixture between Northern Territory (NT) and Tasmania finished at three-each draw.
NT emerged to have a bit advantage over the Tasmania women with their passing game. With wasting little time, the NT players commenced the action and scored first goal of the game in the very first minute. Brooke Peris played a drastic shot from top of the
circle, which moved comfortably into the Tasmanian goal.
The game moved ahead with same speed, but the Tasmanian side managed the tie-up in the 24th minute, when Bridie Hopkins scored a goal from the field and tied the knots. It was the action from both the sides and second round started with a 1-1
dead-lock.
After showing some poor moves, Hopkins and her team-mate, Hannah Calvert, converted two penalty-corners in the 54th and 57th minutes, respectively. However, Peris and Elle Richardson added goals in the 59th and 68th minutes
to lock the horns at three-all. The results remained the same, when the final whistle was blown and match ended in a draw.
