Queensland overpowers ACT in Australian Hockey League: 4-1
Wouter Hermkens scored a single goal but to no avail, as the Men’s hockey team of Australian Capital Territory (ACT) lost the match against Queensland at 4-1 in the Australian Hockey League (AHL) that took place at the Sydney Olympic Park on August 10, 2011.
The match between ACT and Queensland was filled with many attacks and counterattacks but neither team could produce a goal in the first 20 minutes of play. The players from ACT showed impressive passing and carried out counterattacks on many occasions. On
the other hand, the Queensland played with brilliant skills and speed.
After twenty minutes of play, both ACT and Queensland further sped up their actions and exchanged a single goal before moving into the second half of play. However, it was the team of Queensland which was carrying out back-to-back strikes in hunt for a go-ahead
goal. In their fast style of play, Queensland earned a chance when Wouter Hermkens marked a direct hit to clear the ball but it was saved in the hands of opposite striker.
It was Jason Wilson who drove the ball forward and unleashed a scooping shot at the roof of the net to open the scoring at 1-0. In the later period, the Queensland accomplished plenty of attacks but the custodian from the inverse side was active enough to
deny all the attacks.
In the 26th minute of the match, ACT line-up earned a short corner and tested Woeter Hermkens to make a comeback into the game. Hermkens marked an impressive drag flick into the backboard and drew the score at one-each. It was a goal which could
reduce the intensity of his mistake that awarded the maiden goal to Queensland.
ACT and Queensland – the duo line-ups moved into the second half of play with lots of aggression. In the opening minutes of the second period, Glenn Turner received another short corner but to no avail. The effort from Hermkens was denied from the ACT custodian
and they failed to go ahead in the match.
The ACT attack came alive in the later period when Matthew Gohdes managed to take the ball at the top of the circle and tapped in it comfortably into the net in the 46th minute of the mark. In a matter of ten minutes, Daniel Beale drove the ball
at the right corner of the 25-yard line and slammed a reverse shot into the goal to take the lead to two goals, 3-1.
The team ACT rendered efforts to make a comeback into the game but to no avail. Ryan Gibbs converted a short corner in the 65th minute of the mark and sealed the victory for Queensland at 4-1.
