Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced hotel in Queenstown, New Zealand? We want something in town as we won't have a car but everything is $250+ for a night! (we're looking end of February 2008). If anyone has stayed or knows of something good PLEASE let me know! Cheers

  1. Welcome to Queenstown. The prices you were quoted appear reasonable for Queenstown at that time of the year.

As one person has suggested, you may like to try www.wotif, but you probably won't be able to get an indication of availability until about 4 weeks before the date.

Also, check on Arrowtown, there are some very good and cheap motels, and a regular bus service into Q't.

In Q't itself there is an excellent bus service (6.30 am to 10.30 pm every day) so it won't matter if you are at one end or the other, but I suggest you stay away from Gorge Road and Kelvin Heights if you don't have a car.

A good place near enough to the town centre is Marborough Lodge, but it can be a steep climb up to it if you are unfit. There's also the Youth Hostel along the Lakefront.

Have a good time while you are there.

  2. Dec to Feb is the peak/busy summer season - accommodation in Queenstown is expensive as it is ....  Last time I was there was 15 years ago - so sorry I can not advise on cheaper options for you.

Unless you want to try the 'last minute' deals on offer.

  3. Didn't know they did anything reasonable in Queenstown!  We were there in December just before the real holiday season got started and it was noticeable how much more expensive it was for everything.

Nice place, though and I'd go back.  If you take a coach trip down to The Sound, think of splashing out and getting a flight back - the climb up the side of the mountain is awesome.

  4. We stayed at an RV park. They have cabins that were very reasonable. Was there in 2005. It's right near the center of town, about 5 minute walk. The cabins were really spacious. 2 bedrooms and another bed in the living area. ICan't remember the name, but try and check into the RV facilities.

    Have fun!

  5. I recommend staying at one of the Accor Hotels in Queenstown, they are pretty good especially the Mercure Hotel. If not the Heritage hotel is great, so is the Rydges Lakeland Resort.

Do bear in mind that February is peak period in NZ so prices have a tendency to hike up then as it is summer in the southern hemisphere, as well as a popular tourist destination at that time of year. Good luck!
