The Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011 organising New Zealand office has announced on Thursday, July 21 as the “New Zealand’s Best Dressed Street” competition in Queenstown. The purpose of the event is so that the entire community looks their absolute
best and festive before visitors hit Kiwi soil for RWC 2011.
Queenstown is on its way to doll up entire neighbourhoods to give a distinguished Kiwi welcome to the nineteen visiting teams and 85,000 anticipated fans flocking into New Zealand for the RWC 2011, which is kicking off in less than two months’ time. This
is a unique opportunity for the people to be part of the celebrations at home by decorating their houses, streets or workplace.
The idea is to be part of the kiwi welcome by turning the entire vicinity of Queenstown, which is located in the centre of New Zealand's South Island. Queensland is a beautiful all-year round resort which will be decorated by the residents of the community
themselves using mini-flags.
In order to paint the entire event perfectly and give the Kiwi welcome an international feel to it, people are asked to adopt a second team of their own choice. This will be acknowledged as a way to exhibit support to other nations too.
In lieu of this street decoration competition, the winner street will have a party which will carter to 50 people with repast. This party will be thrown on October 15, just ahead of first semi final of RWC 2011. The street party will also have arrangements
for live entertainment.
Tony Everitt who is the chief executive of Destination Queenstown is of view point that the Queenstown will fall into the spirit of World Cup soon.
While speaking about the latest happenings in Queenstown, Everitt stated, “The Queenstown community - of course including places like Arrowtown - are fantastic for getting behind things. We have a really strong community spirit and the fact that we have
four international teams coming here is exciting - you can feel the anticipation building.”
While referring to the “Best dressed street challenge”, Leon Grice who is NZ 2011 Office director mentioned that through this activity the entire community will be brought closer together. He further added that this was a way of showing that New Zealanders
are doing their absolute best to show the visiting teams that nothing has been left unchecked for the mega sporting event of this stature.
Grice further stated, “By 23 September, we want to see suburban streets across the country looking colourful, vibrant and showing off New Zealand at its best.”
The hype of RWC 2011 will be heightened by the unique display and participation from New Zealanders on the whole.
