Querrey ousted by Tipsarevic
Fresh off his meeting with President Barack Obama, world number 20 American Sam Querrey was ousted from the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, losing 7-6(3), 6-3 to Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The number six seeded Querrey had recently defeated Tipsarevic in their meeting last week in Los Angeles at the semifinals of the Farmers Classic.
Querrey did not seem discouraged by his defeat. "I'm still playing great; last week was awesome. It's tough to turn right around. Last week I had three tough two-and-a-half hour matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday and then I had to fly across the country and play in different weather conditions. I'm looking forward to Toronto and Cincinnati."
Tipsarevic takes it away
Having lost in their previous two face-offs, Tipsarevic was able to strike a win during the lucky third meeting with Querrey, claiming the match victory in an hour and 18 minutes.
Both Querrey and Tipsarevic met with several break chances during the opening set of the match, yet neither was able to capitalize on the opportunity. Tipsarevic was finally able to break serve in the second set, turning the tables in game eight. From this point on, the Serbian crept into a commanding lead that Querrey was unable to break.
"He had the one break point and I double faulted, and that's all it takes,” Querrey commented.
All around aces for Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic hammered out an impressive 16 aces throughout the match, even ending things off towards match point with three back-to-back aces past Querrey, who seemed to show signs of fatigue toward the last part of the match, possibly due to continuous on-court action since the previous week at the Farmers Classic.
"I was serving really well," the 26-year-old Tipsarevic commented. "Sixteen aces is very nice. I won a lot of love games, which made me fresher on the return. I was focused from start to finish and I could see that Sam was a little tired from all the matches in Los Angeles."
Tipsarevic currently holds a 16-14 match record this season.
Strong season for Querrey
22-year-old Querrey has already claimed four tournament titles this season on the ATP World Tour, in what has been an impressive showing for the young American. He met President Obama earlier this week, following his involvement in the "Let’s Move!" promotional campaign, a project initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama. Querrey’s current winning record is 33-16.
