Querrey out of Washington but Berdych survives
In a day of upsets, Sam Querrey has been knocked out of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington in the second round, as Janko Tipsarevic completed the upset that narrow eluded him in Los Angeles last week.
The Serbian secured a 7-6(3), 6-3 over the in-form Querrey in Washington, making amends for squandering match point in his semi-final loss to the world No. 20 in LA. Having survived that scare, Querrey went on to claim his fourth title of the season but Tipsarevic has ensured the American won’t be claiming his fifth in the US capital.
Top seed Tomas Berdych, however, remains in contention after surviving a staunch early challenge from Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov in his second round match. The Wimbledon runner-up took hour hours and 17 minutes to secure the 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-1 win, and will now play 16th seed Andrey Golubev for a place in the quarter-finals.
In contrast to Berdych’s struggle, wildcard David Nalbandian cruised past seventh seed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-1, 6-3 to move through to the third round in his first ATP tournament since the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 during May after missing both the French Open and Wimbledon with a leg injury. The former world No 3, who is currently ranked as the world No. 117, now takes on the unseeded Marco Chiudinelli (who defeated 10th seed Radek Stepanek in straight sets) as he looks to book a place in the quarters.
Another seed to make his exit from the tournament in the second round was 2004 Washington champion Lleyton Hewitt, the gritty Australian retiring from his match against Alejandro Falla with a calf injury while trailing 7-5, 3-2.
Falla, who pushed defending champion Roger Federer to five sets in the first round at Wimbledon this year, now takes on Tipsarevic in the third round.
