Installed in new house ChCh area in last 2 years - double glazed windows but open plan - total house size 260 sq m. heat pump in open lounge dining - so trying to heat 2/3rds - less garage & 3 bedrooms- closed off. Heat pump doesn't turn off at night or on cloudy days - in colder conditions 6 -7 deg. or less pump goes into de-ice cycle every hour - spends 10-15 minutes reversing cycle before comes back into operation and then heats for another hour before going into same cycle.. Running at 25 deg setting... We turn off at at night when going to bed - our total power cost winter months 45-50 c per hour - 2 retired persons.. ($300 per month) Anyone experienced the de-icing or defrost problem occuring so frequently - could there be a problem with unit in its operation - frequent attention given to filter maintenance has been upheld.....

  1. Heat pumps will not work when the outside temp gets below 40 degrees, temps that are lower than that require supplemental heat, gas oil or electric.

  2. It's possible that if the unit has mechanical fittings on the lineset, it may have a refrigerant leak. Mechanical fittings are unforgiving when installed improperly.

Call out a pro to give it a check. It's usually a good idea to have yearly maintenance performed anyway to catch small problems like this before they turn into big problems.
