Hello....I have lots of 8mm and Mini DV tapes that I wish to transfer to DVD / PVR / PC. The problem is that my old camcorders are chewing the tapes each time I try to use them. Is there an older (or new) model camcorder that has the ability to play both 8mm and miniDV ? and if so could you please let me know which model ......thank you very much in advance...paul

  1. No there is not, sorry, the tape formats are very different, not only in size but in terms of the way the signal is recorded and read from the tape.  The closest compromise is the Sony Digital8 format, which played back video8 and Hi8 on the higher end models, but recorded a dv signal onto hi8 tape.

Even then such a model would not suit your needs as it would not accept minidv sized cassettes.

You can pick up a minidv camcorder new for around £120, you should be able to get a used 8mm camcorder for £40 on ebay.  If possible make sure that you buy the same model as you had, as things like long play aren't always compatible between brands.   If you can find a used Digital8 model then  you can take the footage in through the firewire, saving the cost of a conversion device.

NB NOT ALL Digital 8 cameras support analogue tape (Video8 Hi8) playback, check before you buy.

  2. Sounds like your 8mm may just need a good clean, give it a go or take it into a shop to be sorted, it may cost you a few quid, or find someone who has one and just copy the stuff to your PC, or you can get a 8mm player.

I would go either with a friend or get the camcorder checked out.

    good luck
