Hello!

I live in NC and I was eating a grapefruit one day and decided to plant the graperfruit seeds. well a couple weeks later they actually grew into little trees, but i was wondering if it will ever have fruit even though i don't live in florida or someplace where they would normally grow.

thanks for your help!

  1. First of all I am very impressed that you grew a tree from seed. That is hard to do. It is unlikely that your tree would be able to bare fruit. But if your could find a hot house then it might after a couple years. Good luck.

  2. Not likely, I actually did the same thing, let the tree grow for a couple of years the tree looked healthy enough, but it only ever had scattered flowers, none of them ever fruited (and I live in Ca, practically next door to lemon orchards so I know the climate is fine).

Two possible reasons I can think of is that it takes longer for the plant to mature (I had to get rid of mine when I moved) and start fruiting my tree was just over 2 feet tall where most of the ones I see growing around here are 6-8 ft tall; or since it was a commercial variety it could have been bred to produce sterile  seeds.

However citrus plants are very sensitive to frost damage, when we had a cold winter here in Ca (which is still probably only approaching freezing in the dead of night) a lot of the oranges and lemon crops were lost so in a place that has actual winters without having artificial heat and light it probably won't do so well.

  3. As long as its getting enough sunlight and water/nutrients, then yes. Its fine but may take a little longer to grow to its full size.

  4. I can't see why not, although I remember my brother, a market gardener, telling me that a lot of  plants etc today are hybrids & won't propagate as their seeds are sterile.
