Question:

Question About How People Remember Things?

by  |  earlier

I can remember some things with ease.. like I can remember almost all the words in a movie if I watch enough and lines and songs and things.. but I could lie a pencil down and forget where it was in like, just a minute.

Also, I find it hard to remember nitty-gritty facts in even my most favorite books series, but will only remember like, the feelings it stirred.

Is there a reason for this? Like is one side of my brain taking up too much space for the other to retain anything? Help'd be appreciated! :)

  1. That's an easy one. Putting your pencil down is just a boring, routine thing that is a subconscious act. Things that have happened to you or a song , a smell, something that you read, involved your emotions and those are the things we remember. If a film or book releases strong emotions, that is why you remember it.

As you get older your memory for mundane things gets worse but you always remember things that stirred you. It's not important that you remember a book line by line.I have many books and films that I loved but couldn't even tell you the plot. I just know they were great films or books that have stood the test of time.

  2. I can remember the phone number we had when I was kindergarten, and the license plate on the car I owned 10 years ago.

Why in the h**l can't I remember to buy everything I need at the grocery store?  Sometimes I totally forget to even stop.

  3. Psychologists haven't yet determined when our long-term memory fills up, so it is considered to be unlimited.  If you watch movies or hear songs repeatedly, then it's like you're practicing them, and practice is the best way to remember things.  When you leave your pencil and can't remember where, it just means that your attention was focused on something else and you weren't really paying attention to what you were doing.  Try saying out loud where you're putting the pencil and see if it is easier for you to remember.
