Question:

Question About (Marriage) Engagement

by  |  earlier

This is a rather stupid question, and yes I'm young, but is an engagement (planning on getting married to someone) an official thing, or is it just up to the two people? Is it just a matter of saying "I'm going to marry this person, here's a ring" and the only official thing is the wedding/marriage papers?

I know it's stupid...but I never really thought about it.

  1. an engagement is a promise to get married it is a way of saying i am commited to you - the only official thing is actually getting married with a marriage certificate that is filed with the state government

  2. An engagement is not an official contract like a marriage is.  So basically it's just an agreement between two people that they are planning on getting married.  Planning is the key word since many engagements never actually result in a marriage.

  3. An engagement is a period when a couple accept to get married. It's sort of a promise to each other

  4. it is kind of official, like i've known ppl who are married for yrs and were engaged for like a month, but then again there are ppl that are just engaged forever and don't want to get married. i think theres definitely a  lot less commitment there though.

  5. i dont thinks official, its just announcement that you will get married in some point in your life, they should make up some word that means you will do something in the future ~ i dunno

  6. There are no papers or legal documents relative to engagement, but it is a commitment. You should not plan to get married until you have discussed everything completely. You sound way too young.

Here's a tip - if you havent discussed what you would like to do in retirement - talk more before engagement.

  7. i would not say that i am engaged unless i had a ring on my finger and i was trying to to book  a church.

you are officially engaged when you get your ring.

    Good luck,

    Summer

  8. It's not a stupid question - basically, two people just decide that they want to marry each other. Normally the guy proposes to the girl with a ring, but you don't have to have a ring or an elaborate proposal. The only thing you need is an agreement to stay committed to each other.

  9. Yes, people get "officially engaged" but it isn't written down.  The actual matrimony/wedding is recorded and papers are signed.

  10. I think only the paper is official. The wedding is not, neither is engagement.

  11. Is it official? Yes and no.

An engagement is not a legally binding agreement in any way, since it is a verbal agreement. (ring issues are another story)

But it is a sincere intent to marry the person. Once engaged, plans for the wedding should follow soon after.
