Question:

Question About Seroquel.?

I have a relative who has taken this and went into a coma and is having MANY problems. The doctors didn't expect her to make it for a few days. My question is, has anyone gone through so much trouble with this medicine and survived? If so, what complications have you had after leaving the hospital?

And if you found the info somewhere, not actually expierencing it, please explain where you found out. You would really help me greatly. Thanks for any answers.

  1. i have had my experiences with seroquel but never anything this serious. i have passed out for about a day 1/2 lifting my head up here and there to see what was going on.  its a very strong drug and you have to have severe problems already to have it prescribed to you. i honestly think everything should be ok. it does make you extremely sleepy, maybe his/her brain just shut down for a little while. (s)hes probably enjoying herself

  2. I can't conceive of Seroquel causing a coma by itself. This medicine is fairly strong, but relatively benign. Even in overdose, the mechanisms this drug works by, and its adverse effects don't relate to a coma at all. If it was a proper coma, are you sure there wasn't another factor involved, such as blood clots, cancer or physical trauma? Any one of those combined with any number of medications could precipitate a coma.

One thing that comes to mind is called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, or NMS. This is NOT a coma, but is a syndrome that arises from the use of antipsychotic drugs. It's very rare with modern ones, but does crop up occasionally. NMS can have lifelong implications depending on the medical intervention received.
