  1. The word torchbearer refers to the person carrying the torch.

  2. dont get urself wound up on stupid questions like this the olympics are retarded anyway

  3. Its a tradition that everyone loves! One of the best athletes lights the torch and the olympics begin!

  4. Think about 776 B.C.  That's when the Olympics began in Olympia, Greece, and they began as religious festivals in honor of the Gods, primarily Zeus.  And it's not just a flame of light; no matter where the Olympics takes place, the flame originates in Olympia where it is lit by the sun, the same way it was lit during the ancient games.  The flame then travels to major cities around the world with designated torchbearers from each city running through town on the Olympic path displaying the torch to its citizens.  The last city to get the flame from Olympia is the host city, where the large Olympic torch is lit, commencing the Olympic games.  There's great history to it.  Do research and the next time you watch the games, please watch with that history in mind...I mean, Before Christ!!  That's amazing.

  5. The Olympics have been going on for a VERY long time. think ancient greece. the only light they had were torches and thats what messengers carried at night to alert each town that the olympics were about to happen.
