Question About atom smashers

So with this new one they are looking for The Higgs Boson and to see what it was like right after the big bang(correct me if I'm wrong?.

So what did they find with the smaller ones? And you can just give me some keywords to google if you don't want to put it here.Or a link about it would be ok also.

I think they were using nuclear fusion to create energy and to find new elements.
