Question:

Question On Dividing Up a Lottery Win?

I understand that for jackpot prizes, you may have to divide the winnings with other people that have the same number.

However, what happens if several people win a lesser prize like $2500?

For example:

Match 5 of 6: 14 (numbr of winners) $2,500 (prize amount)

Does that mean that those 14 winners will have to divide up $2,500? Or will they ALL get $2,500?

How high of a prize does it go before they start dividing the money for multiple winners?

  1. They always divide the money.  Its all a calculated risk and odds.  Its all there on your state's lotto site.

  2. It depends on the state you played in (you can go to your states lottery website for specific rules) -- most times, if you win the "lesser" prize then it is NOT split -- you'd all get the $2,500!!!

I hope this is more than hypothetical!!! Congrats!!! :D

  3. Each prize level has a certain amount of money allocated to it. It is only when there is an inordinate amount of winners at a certain prize level that they have to divide it up. The state expects a certain number of winners at each prize level and prepares for it.

example: The state sets aside $275,000 in money for it's $100,000 prize. If 1 or 2 people win, they each get the $100,000. If 3 people win, they each get $91,666. If 4 win, $68750.

  4. Yes, you`re right. 14 winners 14 equal shares of the lump sum.

    2,500 divided by 14.
