I'm currently going to school for criminal justice and want to become a police officer. After a few years of being a in the police force I thought it was be good to become an FBI agent but there is one potential problem. When i was younger i tried marijuana and i was wondering if this would destroy my changes of becoming an agent?

  1. I'm telling them!

  2. Don't tell anyone and you're good.

  3. Younger?  How much?  I don't get the idea that it was recent history.  Marihuana?  How much?

Were you charged?  Did you plea guilty to a crime?  Were you too young to be convicted of all but specific crimes (16)?  If too young, it won't be on your open record, but criminal recording can be a dark art, with some rap-sheets indicating case histories that shouldn't be there - dismissed cases, sealed cases, youthful adjudications, ACD's and so on.

The FBI?  If you make it to any real police force, this case won't likely be the deal-breaker.  No, you'll more likely have to deal with the punishing competitiveness if getting any Federal law enforcement job.  To nab a slot with the FBI, you'll need the kind of law enforcement experience you won't get after just a few years on the force.  You'll probably need to achieve some rank in the detective grade, with a history of working in complicated cases in specialty fields (narcotics, gun running, white collar crime) - the FBI does not take beat cops, and local police forces are filled with guys overworked, underpaid and strapped for something better than a 2nd job, and ahve been working there for more than a few years.  You'll also need more academic credentials than an undergrad degree in criminal justice (not sure if that's what you have), maybe going back to school for a post-grad degree in fields like forensics or psychology, maybe even law school.

  4. Were you arrested and charged with possession or a similar drug charge? If not, then no one will know that you once tried it. If you were arrested and were a minor, then your record should be sealed now.

When you apply to the FBI, a police force or for any job, you may be asked to take a drug test that will see if there are certain drugs currently in your system, and they will do a background check, looking for any arrests or criminal or civil complaints.

  5. should last only 2 years in your bloodstream, you should be safe now! Good luck

  6. No, you didn't try marijuana.  That was a ciggarette.  You've never tried marijuana.  Repeat if necessary.

  7. your record gets swiped clean at 18. so if you did it under that age, no one will ever see it.

  8. I have no idea what the standards of the FBI are...when you become a police officer, if you ever have to arrest someone for marijuana, at least you'll remember that was YOU with the marijuana when you younger.

  9. TELL THE TRUTH - if you lie and get found out, you're fired.  If you tell them and it's a case form when you were fourteen, it probably will not amount to anything but extra questions.  Sometimes juvenile cases are sealed, sometimes not...  the FBI may look into a sealed file or it may not be entirley "sealed"  Your best option is honesty.... no matter what job you're going for.
