Question:

Question about 12 weeks ultrasound?

I'm having my 12 week scan tomorrow and they gave me a paper that says I need to drink 32 ounces of liquid before the appointment. Further down on the paper it says that a trans-vaginal ultrasound is required for everyone before week 14. I've read everywhere that for a trans-vaginal you don't need a full bladder...so I'm confused. Are they probably going to do an abdominal first? I don't care which I have, I'll just be happy to see baby! I know I'll find out tomorrow for sure, I'm just seeing what you guys have to say :)

  1. they are going to try to have a regular ultra sound, and thats why you are asked drink, if they cant get the results they want, they will ask you to empty your bladder and do the trans-vaginal. Every ultra sound ive had even at 26 weeks they have asked this of me, you get better images.

  2. after they do the regular ultrasound, in which you need to have a full bladder, they will have you go to the bathroom and come back for the trans-vag ultrasound.

  3. I never had to have a full bladder . In fact they made me empty my bladder before the ultrasound. They probably will do a vaginal because the baby isn't big enough to see through the abdomen yet.

  4. when i went for my ultrasound around then, they had me come with a full bladder. I think its because they did an abdominal ultrasound first, and when your that early in your pregnancy it makes things more visible. Then they had me empty my bladder and did the trans-vaginal ultrasound! So maybe thats what they are doing for you!

    Best of Luck!

  5. Like you, I have always been instructed to have a full bladder, no matter how far along I am!  However, the tech has also had me empty it, so it is a bit confusing.  Usually, before 12 weeks, they do the transvaginal because it provides a better view of the baby and is especially important for measurements, etc.  At 12 weeks, they will probably do both.  Depends on how well they can see baby!  You might luck out, though, and only need the abdominal.  :)  Good luck!  It's SOO exciting to see your little one!  :)

  6. I did not have to have a full bladder.  I think the older equipment requires you to do so.  Maybe that is why?

  7. From my own experience, you're better off going in with a full bladder instead to avoid the staff giving your grief about an empty bladder (trust me, Brookes Radiology went as far as mentioning my empty bladder in their letter to my GP)!!  The times I've had a trans-vaginal ultrasound, the technician tried to take some measurements via abdominal first.  If they can't take the proper measurements, they will ask you to empty your bladder for a trans-vaginal.

    Hope this helps!

  8. I think it dedpends on the machine being used. I had a scan at 18 weeks (2&3/4d) and was told to empty my bladder by the specialist but ar my 20 week scan at the regular ob office I had to have a full bladder. Back at the specialists office at 22 weeks it was an empty bladder so it just depends.

  9. hi there,

im kinda happy to know someone else is also going thru what i am right now..im also going for my 12 weekd ultrasound on wednesday 27th august.. they have asked me to drink 32 ounces of liquid. now for the trans-vaginal.. i had mine when i was 5 weeks pregnant to confirm the due date..thats it...i didnt have it again and i dont think u might need it otherwise they would have asked u for it earlier.. my doc told me i need transvaginal for the exact due date..  u will only have an abdominal ultrasound.. best of luck with seeing ur baby.. also i hope u can answer this but are u looking forward to finding out if its a boy or girl? im kinda desperate to know.. i really dont think they can tell u at 12 weeks...am i right?

  10. 12 weeks ultrasound needs to drink 32 ounces water?

no! only 4 -6 weeks need to drink a lot liquid. I didn't require to drink anything when I was 12 weeks. and U don't need the vaginal type ultrasound, ( i don' tknow why it 's required? where are you ?)

u 'd better avoid of that.  Abdominal type will be enough to see your baby....12 weeks, the baby is moving. you can see it very clearly!

you will enjoy your life with your lovely baby inside.

    congraulations!!
