  1. My son was like that for a little bit. What i noticed he would talk a little if i didnt ask him. But when i keep asked he would always shack his head or pretend that he didnt understnad you  because he knows that is what you want. He will talk when he wants to like teenages if you pressure them they will do the complete oppisite.

  2. completely normal. my 16 month doesnt walk or make any words out. dont worry be glad that they dontt alk yet. soon he will be talking your ear off. talk to your dr to see what he suggests.

  3. From a speech pathologist's point of view, here is what a 14-month old is generally expected to do:

Play: plays fetching, shows functional use of objects, shows symbolic use of objects

Language comprehension: follows one-step directions, responds to requests to say words, maintains attention to pictures, responds to 'give me', points to two actions in pictures, understands some prepositions and new words, identifies 3 body parts, enjoys rhythm and music.

Language expression: shakes head 'no,' produces 8-10 words, names one object frequently, imitates new words, uses words with jargon, imitates 3 animal sounds, expresses early modifiers

Your son, receptively, might be at an age-appropriate level. His expressive language, though, might be delayed, based on what you've stated.  I will gladly give you strategies that you can use at home in order to stimulate his language expression. Please feel free to contact me.

  4. I've been going through this with my 15 month old.  She just recently started to say a few words but until literally this week, did what your son is doing.  She started spitting out words all of a sudden - - just at the same time I noticed she had 2 new teeth.  This was the first time I didn't know she was teething b/c none of the "normal" signs were there.  Once they popped in she's spitting words out like nothing else.  Just today she said "duck" and "ta-da" which are totally new for her.

Your son's comprehension seems great and he is meeting/exceeding the CDC (cdc.gov search for milestones) websites milestones for a child of his age.  Maybe he's being a tough teether.  Also - -maybe "make" him talk.  Don't give him what he wants without some effort on his end to say the word.  Some kids just don't say much at his age either.  It's normal for kids to wake up at 2 and decide they are ready and start spitting out like 75 words in a day.  If it continues to concern you in the next 4 months or so, follow up with the pediatrician, but in the meantime he really does sound on par/even a little above his age.  Good Luck
