Question about Air Purifiers...?

I bought an air purifier and it has an on/off switch for the optional Ionizer. It indicates that when the ionizer switch is in the On position, it will release negative ions into outgoing filtered air. I am confused. Does this help eliminate odors like smoke, or should I leave the switch in the Off position?? Please help me. Thanks.

Turn on the Ionizer and leave it on, this will make the purifier work more efficiently.

Try it and see for yourself.  I always left the switch "on"
