Question about CVT transmission

I was wondering...could a CVT transmission reduce your engine lifetime or even kill it because I've seen some acceleration videos of a Maxima with CVT and the engine continuously rev at 6000 rpm. Could you kill the engine if u run like this non-stop for about 10 mins or more?

  1. I'm certain that the car will not be running continually at 6k rpm. CVT transmissions have better fuel economy than most other types, and the way they reduce consumption of fuel is by keeping revs low. I assume the video you saw was at wide open throttle, as soon as you would let off on the gas it would lower the gear ratio and decrease RPMs.
