Please help, I need a little bit of clarification...

I know when a Catholic marries a non-Catholic they agree to rasie their children as Catholics during the ceremony. Now, does this mean that you pledge to raise the children as Catholic or that they will be open to raising them Catholic?

  1. There is no declaration about raising kids DURING the ceremony. Prior to the ceremony, the Catholic spouse-to-be pledges to raise the children Catholic. The non-Catholic spouse is asked to be open to that and to not prevent the Catholic spouse from raising the children Catholic.

  2. Of course the church's position is that you WILL raise your children as Catholic.  Whether you do or not, is a personal matter.  It's not as though the church is going to hire spies to watch you and make sure that you're raising your children as Catholic, but they would certainly consider it a sin if you didn't.

  3. I think you can chose, because my dad was catholic and my mom was  Episcopalian (so was I) and we were Episcopalian until 2 years ago.
