Question:

Question about Commonwealth Care in Massachusetts?

I have Commonwealth care and i was recently hired by a company that offers health insurance. There's no way i can afford the insurance (i earn less than $15k per year and i'm in school working part time). If i decline the insurance will i be automatically disenrolled from commonwealth care? If so, can i appeal this decision? I cannot go without insurance, as I have multiple health issues that i see doctors for on a monthly basis. should i turn down the job offer and look for a job that will not provide insurance?

  1. I found this to answer your question:

    Am I eligible?

You are eligible for Commonwealth Care if:

you are age 19 or older

you are not eligible for Medicare, MassHealth, TriCare, the Medical Security Plan, the Fishing Partnership Health Plan, or mandated QSHIP college student insurance

    you meet the income limits

    you are uninsured

you are a citizen, a qualified noncitizen, or noncitizen with special status. Undocumented noncitizens cannot get Commonwealth Care. See Can noncitizens get MassHealth? for more information.

    You are considered uninsured if:

you do not have health insurance that covers doctor's visits and hospitalization, and you have not been offered employer-subsidized health insurance in the past 6 months where the employer covered at least 20% of the annual premiums for a family and 33% of the annual premiums for an individual

or you have been offered employer-subsidized insurance, but you are in a waiting period for coverage

or you have health insurance, but you are paying the full premium cost under COBRA or a nongroup plan

Commonwealth Care is only for adults. Children get MassHealth instead of Commonwealth Care.

So if your employer doesn't cover at least 33% of the premium, you can decline it and will still be ok...
