If I have a copyright, and then change several things about the material, can I get the copyright updated, or does it not matter?

  1. you will want to add in an amendment to the copyright. If a piece changes 10% you will need to update your copyright

  2. You hold copyright to everything original you write as soon as you write it. All that registering the work does is let you enforce it with punitive damages. Of course, you have to sue to enforce it, an expensive proposition.

But don't worry too much about copyright. When you're talking about paying publications, no one's out to steal your work. Copyright is the last thing you need to worry about. (Of course they can steal you ideas. You can't copyright ideas. But, for one thing, they're not your ideas. Many others had them before you. And ideas are cheap. Doing something with them is hard.)
