Alright, I'm trying to sell my electric guitar on Craigslist, and I keep getting replies like this:

Regarding the payment term,I can only for now pay you with a certified check in U.S dollars,so pls let me have the following informations so that the payment can be made to you :

1.clear picture of the item

2.Your full name to be on the check.

3.Your postal address.

4.Your postal code

5.Your last asking price

I need above details to facilitate qiuick payment so that you receive via United Parcel Service(UPS) in the next 2days.Concerning the shippment,it is my regular shipper that will come for the pick up as soon as you recieve your money in hands. Thanks in Advance.

I mean, this is literally the 4th email I have gotten like this, but with different names. These aren't legitimate, are they? I mean, I definitely wouldn't give my home address to somebody I don't know. Are these bots or something?

Any helpful information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

  1. If you go ahead with this transaction, the check you receive will be a counterfeit (fake) check. The check will be written for an amount much greater than your asking price plus the so-called shipping expenses. The buyer will eventually ask you to wire him or mail him the difference between the check amount and your asking price. Several weeks or possibly months later, the bank will notify you that the check was fake, and you will owe the bank the full amount of the check. You will have ultimately wired your own money to a criminal.

This is a fake check scam and they are abundant on Craigs List and other online classified sites.

DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM.

  2. It breaks my heart that Craigslist has become a home for thieves and scoundrels.  All the Nigerian scammers are there.  Do all Craigslist transactions in person and in cash. Which means that you drive to meet people and examine the goods.  And you must ask all landlords for drivers licenses to prove they own the apartment they are renting.

  3. This is a scam, a very common scam.   Just ignore them.
