  1. I would say he has clearly exceeded at both. The San Jose sharks weren't really established as a playoff team before he got their. As coach, they went to the playoffs 5 years in a row. They never advanced very far, but they weren't exactly that good either. Then he got fired and went to Calgary in 03'. In 04' he made the move that shows his hockey IQ for spotting hidden gems of talent. He knew Mikka Kippersoff in SJ, as a backup. He brought him to Calgary and Kipper has been an All-star and the franchise goalie ever since. He led the Flames on the miracle run of 04', winning Calgary's 1st playoff series since 89', and defeating 3 division winners en route to the SCF. And the beat the Sharks, the team Sutter built up, in the CF.

After the strike he coached the Flames to a division title and 3rd seed, They were upset by the Duck. He stepped down, and has shown his knack as an GM. Despite the Flames playoff woes the past 2 seasons, he has built the team up on young talent, and has the franchise backbone players signed for long term deals. He is building a franchise that will contend for years to come. (Iginla, Phanuef, Kipper). He has an eye for hidden talent, and is real man's hockey kinda guy, believing in hard physical hard working hustle play that wins games.

So he is a good coach, who believes in old school hustle defense first hockey, and that bleeds down as a GM and you see it through the coaches he hires (Keenan). I liked him as a coach, but seeing his talent as a GM would like him to stay up there doing that while Keenan, a proven coach, runs the team.

So I think he is a great coach, having turned around to franchises, but he is better a GM, capable of building a contender with pure hockey genius.

  2. It's hard to say.  I had the pleasure of meeting Darryl while he was coaching the Sharks.  He is an excellent coach, but he seems to have a knack for being a GM too.  His team made it to Stanley Cup Finals when he had both positions.  It's obvious that he knows his stuff.
