I am going to El Salvador for a month this summer, this will be my first time in El Salvador. I am going for school and not necessarily for vacation. Can anyone tell me what I can expect El Salvador to be like in July? And any other information about El Salvador would be great! Thanks!

  1. It's interesting that you chose El Salvador for school. Well my parents are from there and I personally love it. In July, what you will need will be shorts and a sweater. Yeah I know weird combination, but during the day it will be hot and at night it will be cold. Just prepare yourself for the quick weather changes. Also no a.c. so it will ge hot every now and then but the night time will make up for it. So pack alot of shorts and capris but also a couple of pants just in case.

  2. since the weathers gonna be nice and hot, ms-13 will be out. ;]

  3. It's interesting that you've chosen El Salvador to go and study.  Generally, Costa Rica, Panama and/or Mexico are the 3 hot spots for studying abroad in this part of Latin America.

If you're going to be at a low altitude it will mostly likely very rainy, hot and very humid.  If you have the opportunity to go to a high altitude, in the mountains, then the weather is generally much better.

Most likely the people will be very poor where you are going and they may or may not have many English speakers in that city or village.

Have fun.  You will learn a lot!!  Be kind and thoughtful, be careful (especially at night), call your bank or credit card company and let them know your plan before you go. I don't suggest using a  "debit card" to purchase items... unless you must.  Use a credit card if possible.  You have much more of an insurance plan with a credit card.

Also, learn as much as you can about Salvadorean culture, aka the dos and donts before you go.  Read what www.wikipedia.com says about El Salvador.

    Best wishes!!

  4. The weather will be hot (usually between 65-90 (night/day)).  It will be very humid too since it'll be in the rainy season.  Bring an umbrella or rain jacket and shoes that can get wet and then dry very easily.

The weather's going to depend on what part of the country you're in.  It's much hotter near the ocean, but in the mountains it's colder.  I used to need 2 blankets at night sometimes.

As for clothing, make sure to bring some capris.  Where I lived no one ever wore shorts, and I only saw a few in the city.  Also, wearing high heels if popular when you go out anywhere.  Don't bring anything leather, it tends to mold, especially if it's suede.

Be ready for cockroaches.  They're nasty and big, but you get used to them.

Always be careful how and when you travel.  I always liked to carry Mace with me, even though I never had to use it.  You never know when the drunk on the corner is going to move faster than you expected.

Make sure you try pupusas, they're wonderful!  They come with curtido (a pickled cabbage & vegetables they put in jars on the table).  It sits out for a long time in the heat and whoever wants can dip into it.  Also, pork is not too safe to eat from the restaurants or street vendors.  I met a couple families when I was there who had family members who had died or gotten seriously ill from bad pork.

If you're out in the country, make sure to take bugspray.  My friends and I had contests to see who had the most bugbites on our legs, and I think the winner had 69 on just one leg.  In the city it's not that bad.

The more Spanish you know, the easier it will be too.  More people speak English in the city, but outside the city there are fewer.

I think that's all I can think of for now.  Hope that helps!
