When an employer has a copy of your drivers license and social security card, and they do a background check with that, what do they use to run the background check, the DL or the social? If your DL is not valid anymore, will it show up on the background check?

  1. Every background check process is a bit different at different companies.  Most of the time an employer will use your SS# to check your education, criminal history (arrest record), and sometimes your credit history if you'll be working with money.

Your DL# is used to check your driver's record, especially if you'll be driving as part of your job (pizza delivery, for instance.)

  2. From what I know, they have a copy of your driver's license to verify your age, but if it's not valid, they *may* find out.

They definitely do a check on your social security card to make sure you're legally able to work in your country.

  3. Normally they use your social. The DL is just so they know you are the person that you say you are. Unless its for a driving job then they will need a valid DL to see you driving history

  4. They can use either or both. Yes your DL will show it is not valid. The amount of information they can get is usually only limited by how much they pay for on a background website.

  5. They have copies to most likely prove who you are. If they run a driving record report then they will most likely find out your license is invalid. They probably wouldn't run your driving record if you are not going to be driving in any sort of capacity for the company though.

They may run your social security number for something called a social security trace or credit header. That usually shows addresses and names that you have used in the past to obtain credit. They may use these addresses to determine the jurisdictions to run criminal record report then. They may also use this info to run a regular credit report on you as well, but usually only if are going to be working with money or have some type of high level position.

They may also use your social security number to determine if that number belongs to you by contacting the social security administration.

So, the bottom line is they will probably only use your DL number if they are going to run a driving record on you in which case, yes, they will know your DL is invalid.
